What is Clomid?
Clomid is a fertility drug that stimulates the release of hormones responsible for ovulation . Clomid therapy is usually used for 5 consecutive days early in the menstrual cycle , for 3 to 6 monthly cycles. Finding the right dose to stimulate ovulation may take several cycles. If the right dose is finally determined , a woman will take the drug for 3 more cycles.
Why Clomid is used
Clomid may be prescribed to women for the following reasons:
-To stimulate ovulation in women who do not ovulate or those who ovulate irregularly. However for a doctor to prescribe this drug the woman's estrogen levels must be normal and her pituitary glad function must be normal too. Also her male partner must be diagnosed as fertile.
- To perform a test that is known as a Clomiphene challenge test whose aim is to evaluate a woman's ovulation and egg quality (ovarian reserve). Women who are found to have a diminished ovarian reserve can use donor eggs which greatly enhances their chances of giving birth to healthy babies.
-To stimulate the development of multiple eggs to be used in assisted reproductive technology , such as gamete intrafallopian transfer(GIFT) or in vitro fertilization(IVF).
-To stimulate ovulation in women who ovulate irregularly or those who are due for intrauterine insemination or artificial insemination.
Clomid can also be used together with other medicines and infertility treatments . You can buy Clomid online but it is always good to ask your doctor about its side effects.
Women with polycystic ovary syndrome who are also overweight are advised to lower their body mass index through diet and exercise before trying Clomid . This is because reaching a healthy weight can restart ovulation.
Clomid and men
Clomid is used to treat low sperm counts in men (oligospermia).
Effectiveness of Clomid
- For couples with unexplained infertility, there is no evidence that Clomid may actually increase chances of pregnancy. However Clomid is known to be most effective when it is used for generating multiple eggs before an insemination procedure.
-For women whose infertility is only due to infrequent or absence of ovulation, it has been proven that 80% of them will ovulate with the use of Clomid. In addition to this 70-75% of this group of women will become pregnant.
- Clomid has been shown to be effective in treating polycystic ovary syndrome and severe insulin resistance , which is closely linked to obesity, in most women.
